Who it is for

Priya starts a relay in her neighborhood. The baton can only move when the holder does something kind for someone and hands it to them in person by QR. Each pass drops a pin and a short note. Months later, her baton has crossed three countries and 140 strangers, and anyone can follow its path.

Why it is new

What exists today, and what this does differently

What is new

A one-of-one object whose only way to move is a face-to-face act of care, logged as a living map anyone can follow, with no price and no market.

Closest things out there

Pass the Baton (Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith) passes baton NFTs between holders with donations to nonprofits, but transfers are market trades and there is no in-person handoff or journey map.

Checked with web searches in October 2026. A search is not proof that nothing similar exists, and the market moves fast, so we recheck before every build.

The pitch, ready

A baton with no price that only moves when someone is kind, face to face, followed on a living map.

Problem: Small kindnesses happen every day and vanish without a trace. Communities and schools want a gentle way to keep them going without turning care into a market or a points race.

Solution: A one of one onchain baton with no transfer function. It moves only by a two phone pass after a kind act, logging a coarse pin and a short note on a public map.

Why now: Passkey wallets, sponsored gas under a cent and small models for translation and moderation make it usable by anyone with a phone camera.

Market: Schools, faith groups, running clubs, charities and city festivals that run community campaigns, plus the funders who support them.

The ask: Pilot partners: three schools and one charity campaign, and support from public goods rounds such as Optimism Retro Funding, with no promise of any grant.

Funding is never guaranteed. Check each program's rules.

Why it matters and how it really works

The need

Small kindnesses happen every day and vanish without a trace. Communities, schools and nonprofits want a gentle, visible way to keep them going and to show people that strangers are connected, without turning care into a market or a points race.

What exists and what is new

Pass the Baton (Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith) already passes baton NFTs between holders with donations to nonprofits, but its transfers are market trades, there is no in-person handoff and no journey map. Pay-it-forward apps and kindness challenges exist off chain without a single traceable object. What is new here is a one-of-one object with no price and no transfer function, whose only way to move is a face-to-face pass after a kind act, logged as a coarse, living map anyone can follow. Research verdict: rare, medium novelty.

The data it runs on

Per pass: baton id, previous and new holder wallets (passkey wallets created on the spot), a coarse location cell chosen by the holder (5 km, city or country), a fingerprint of the short note, and a timestamp. The note text lives in the relay's own store so it can be removed on request. Exact location, phone numbers and names beyond a first name never leave the phone.

1.The mission

Make kindness visible as a chain of strangers, so that one act at a bus stop can be followed across the world and invite the next one.

2.Why people can't resist it

Your kindness keeps travelling Past holders get a line when the baton they passed is 2, 10 and 100 passes further on. You see where your act went.

A Sunday postcard Followers get one postcard a week: where the baton is, who holds it, the newest note. Calm, not a feed.

It cannot be bought No price, no market, no transfer button. The only way to hold it is to be kind to someone who has it, or to have them be kind to you.

3.How it works for real

Baton contract: A soulbound style token on Base (or Optimism, or a Solana program) with no transfer function. A pass function accepts only a pair of signatures from the current and next holder over a nonce that expires in 60 seconds.

In-person handoff: The holder's phone shows a QR that rotates every 20 seconds. The new holder scans it with a normal phone camera, a web page creates a passkey wallet (Privy or a similar embedded wallet), and both sign. Optional Bluetooth proximity check where the browser allows it.

Relayer and gas: A paymaster sponsors gas so nobody needs crypto. A pass on Base costs well under one cent at current fees.

Rules in the contract: No passing back to any of the last 5 holders, at most one pass per 24 hours, and a hold limit after which the baton returns to the previous holder.

Keeper agent: A small model (for example Claude Haiku tier) translates notes, checks them for addresses or personal details and flags problems to the relay starter. It never hides a note or moves a baton on its own.

Map and follower page: An indexer reads pass events and draws the thread on a map with pins snapped to the chosen coarse cell. Followers subscribe by email or push for the Sunday postcard.

Crossing chains: When a relay moves to a new home chain, the old baton is locked and a new one is opened with a link to the full history, so only one is ever live.

4.Cost per use and pricing

Per pass: about $0.001 to $0.01 in sponsored gas on Base or Optimism, under $0.001 on Solana, plus about $0.001 for a Haiku tier note check. A relay with 3 batons doing 150 passes a month and 2,000 Sunday postcard followers costs roughly $2 in gas and models and $10 to $20 in email and hosting, so under $25 a month.

Community Free
One baton, public map, Sunday postcard for up to 500 followers.
School or club $19 a month
Up to 20 batons, private class maps, teacher moderation, printable baton art.
Organisation $149 a month
Unlimited batons, custom art and domain, multi-chain home ports, impact report for funders and grant rounds.

5.Growth loop

Every pass recruits one new person in person, and every new holder shares their pin with friends and family. Schools and charities start batons as campaigns, and the Sunday postcard brings followers back each week. Public-good rounds such as Optimism Retro Funding and Gitcoin can fund relays as community experiments, with no promise of any grant.

6.Risks and guardrails

Location and safety: A map of people is sensitive. Pins are always coarse, exact location never leaves the phone, and any holder can remove their note and blur their pin to country level.

Fake or farmed passes: Friends can pass back and forth. The last-5 rule, one pass per day and the keeper's flags to the starter limit this; a relay starter can fold suspicious passes into one.

Minors: Schools will want batons in classrooms. Child holders should use a class account run by a teacher, with no names on the map.

Moderation: Notes can contain hurtful or personal content. The keeper flags, a human decides, and removed notes leave only the fingerprint onchain.

Lost phones and stalls: A holder can lose their phone or stop caring. The hold limit returns the baton to the previous holder so it is never stuck forever.

Speculation: Someone may try to sell access to a famous baton off platform. The contract cannot be traded, and the relay says plainly that it has no value and earns nothing.

7.Build order

  1. Baton contract with pass-only movement and the last-5 and 24-hour rules on Base
  2. Rotating QR handoff page with passkey wallet creation and sponsored gas
  3. Note and coarse cell per pass, stored with a fingerprint onchain
  4. Public journey map and follower page
  5. Hold limit with nudges and automatic return
  6. Keeper agent for translation and flags to the starter
  7. Sunday postcard email

8.Where this is going

  1. Now
One baton from a bus stop in Bengaluru, passed hand to hand, followed on a map.
  2. Next
Schools, mosques, temples, churches and running clubs start their own relays; batons cross between them.
  3. Later
Cities run relays during festivals and disasters, so neighbours can see help moving street by street.
  4. World-changing
A living, public record of millions of small acts of care between strangers, owned by no one and impossible to sell.

Why own Kindness Relay

A Kindness Relay is a story that grows every time a stranger passes the baton, and the person who starts it is the one people remember. Owning the app means every baton, map and follower page carries your name, the contract lives on your wallet, and the onchain journey shows you started something that crossed cities without a single sale. Borrow someone else's and you are just one pin on their map.

What’s stopping you?

“What if the baton stops after two passes?”

Some will. That is normal and the map still shows a real story. Start with several batons in communities that already like each other, and give each holder a gentle reminder after a week. A stalled baton can be revived by its starter.

“Does sharing locations put people at risk?”

The app records a coarse location, roughly city level, never an exact address, and notes are optional. Tell holders not to include names or addresses in notes, and keep the default coarse.

“How does a non-tradable baton make any money?”

The baton itself never earns; that is the point. Money comes from organisations that pay to run relays (schools, charities, brands doing community campaigns), extra batons, and printed QR cards. It is a modest business with a big heart; the ladder below is a target, not a promise.

“People will think it is a crypto scam.”

There is no price, no market and no token to buy. Holders never need to understand crypto; they scan a QR in person. Lead with the kindness and the map, mention onchain only as the reason the journey cannot be faked.

“Is it really mine?”

Yes. The baton contract deploys from your wallet, the relay name and art are yours, and DEPLOYR hands everything over.

The million-dollar ladder

Organisations pay to run branded relays for campaigns (schools, charities, companies on volunteering days), individuals pay for extra batons and printed handoff cards, and large campaigns pay a setup fee for custom maps and reports. This is a target, not a promise.
