WHY BUILD

The cheapest moment in history to own what you ship.

For years the crypto playbook was to use other people's apps and hope for a reward. That still exists. But the people who keep showing up in hackathons, grants and builder programs are the ones who shipped something. Here is why that is now within reach for almost anyone, and what it honestly costs.

FARMING: MANY WALLETS, NOTHING OWNEDYoursBUILDING: ONE APP, ON YOUR WALLET

Four reasons, with receipts

01 · COST

AI collapsed the cost of shipping

In GitHub's controlled experiment, developers using an AI assistant finished a coding task 55% faster than those without it. Tools have only improved since. Building is still work, but the wall is lower than it has ever been.

02 · OWNERSHIP

One person can own the whole loop

An onchain app takes payments in stablecoins, keeps users' assets in their own wallets and lives at a public address anyone can verify. No platform approval, no payment processor sign up, no permission to launch. You hold the contract keys.

03 · PROGRAMS

Ecosystems reward people who ship

Optimism's Retro Funding for onchain builders only considered projects with deployed contracts and measured real usage. Base Batches runs buildathons with incubator places and a demo day. Gitcoin Grants lets projects build a funding profile across rounds. None of these are guaranteed. All of them start with having built something.

Owning a working app is also a portfolio piece you can link, a credential you can verify onchain, and a small business you can grow at your own pace.

The path: four steps

  1. STEP 1

    Pick

Choose a vessel that fits a need you care about.

  2. STEP 2

    Try the demo

Sail it live with sample data. No wallet needed.

  3. STEP 3

    Reserve or own

Fixed price. Not built yet? A refundable deposit holds it.

  4. STEP 4

    Launch and race

Deployed on your wallet, then match it to a race on the Regatta board.

No excuses: what you get vs building alone

WITH DEPLOYR
  • A complete app, not a template
  • A live demo before you pay anything
  • A fixed price shown up front
  • A refundable deposit for apps built on order
  • Deployed on your own wallet and repository
  • An Owner Playbook for what to do next
  • Hackathon matching on the Regatta board
BUILDING ALONE
  • Weeks or months of evenings to reach a first version
  • Writing, testing and deploying smart contracts
  • Wallet connection, sign in and chain switching
  • Stablecoin payments and their edge cases
  • Hosting, domains and keeping it all running
  • Working out which races your project can enter

Building alone is a great way to learn, and we encourage it. The point is that not knowing how is no longer a reason to wait.

Three builders

Illustrative stories. These people are fictional; the paths are real options.

Amara, Lagos

a savings circle app

Ran a paper savings group for her market stall friends. Put it onchain, shared the link in the group chat, and now shows the live app in every grant application she writes.

Tomás, Valparaíso

a local events pass

Had farmed testnets for two years with nothing to show. Picked one app, entered a buildathon that allowed existing projects, and kept iterating after it ended.

Mei, Taipei

an AI study agent

A teacher, not a developer. Tried the demo on her phone, reserved it, and uses it with her class. Her contract deployment is the first line on her new portfolio.

The honest risks

  • Airdrops, grants and prizes are never guaranteed. Many builders receive none.
  • An app with no users earns nothing. Distribution is still your job.
  • Hackathon rules differ. Some require fresh code, so check every race.
  • Onchain apps carry smart contract and market risk. Start small.
  • You own the app, so you also own the upkeep and the decisions.

Questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You pick an app, try the demo, and we deploy it on your wallet. Learning the code helps you go further, and every app ships with its source in your own repository.

Will owning an app get me an airdrop?

No one can promise that. Airdrops, grants and prizes are decided by other teams and are never guaranteed. What you do get is a working app, a deployed contract on your wallet and a real record of shipping.

How much does it cost?

Each app has a fixed price shown on its page. Apps that are not built yet are reserved with a refundable deposit, and you pay the balance on delivery.

Can I enter hackathons with it?

Some races allow existing projects if you disclose them, others require fresh code. The Regatta board labels the rule for every race, so you know before you enter.

What if I change my mind?

Try the demo before paying anything. For apps built on order, the deposit is refundable until we deliver.

Is farming bad?

Using apps you like is fine. The point is that programs keep filtering wallet farms, while shipping something real is harder to fake and stays yours.
